The outer tub is the sealed plastic or stainless-steel vessel that holds the wash water. The inner drum (the perforated basket the laundry sits in) rotates inside it, driven by the motor. On most front-loaders, the outer tub is sealed to the front of the machine by the door seal gasket. Tub cracks — rare but caused by bearing failure or foreign object impact — typically require full tub replacement. Inner drum failure is almost always a broken paddle (lifter) or a worn drum spider bearing seat, both of which are separately replaceable on most major brands.
